Health insurance is mandatory for all international students enrolled at Virginia International University. All VIU students holding a student visa must be enrolled in the VIU Health Insurance Program.
Students must pay for Health Insurance at the beginning of each coverage period:
- Fall semester: September 1 – December 31
- Spring/Summer semesters: January 1 – August 31
Please note, paying for Health Insurance does not automatically enroll you in the program. You must see the appropriate officer in the Waples Mill Campus to confirm your enrollment and collect your health insurance card.
Cancellation and refund policy:
VIU will not permit enrolled students to cancel insurance policy and receive refunds effective from Fall 2013 semester. Students who graduate from VIU and are on OPT will continue to be on the insurance until the policy expires. They have the option of renewing their insurance while they are on OPT, but will not be considered for VIU insurance after their visa changes from F1 to other.
If you are currently enrolled (before Fall 2013 renewal), and graduate or transfer to other school before your policy expires, you will be refunded on cancellation of your policy upon your request; from the 1st day of the following month.
If you are a new student and decide to transfer from VIU, you will be permitted to cancel the policy during the ‘add and drop period’. You will not be able to cancel the policy after the last date to add and drop courses or program.
