Commencement Ceremony 2017
We are excited to announce VIU's commencement ceremony will be held on May 6, 2017 at 2:00 PM at George Mason University's Center for the Arts Building at 4373 Mason Pond Dr, Fairfax, VA 22030.
Please mark your calendars for this exciting event as we will be honoring graduates from academic programs as well as students who have completed the English as a Second Language and TOEFL programs. During this time graduates have the opportunity to be recognized for their achievements in front of their professors, VIU staff, fellow classmates, and family members, many of whom have traveled from their home countries to attend the event.
All students graduating Summer 2016 through Spring 2017 must fulfill all program, academic, financial, and university requirements. All requirements will be verified by your school and the Registrar's Office. Please keep in mind that graduation is NOT automatic! It is your responsibility to notify the Registrar's Office of your intention to graduate. Read more about the graduation process.
Cap & Gown Information
Academic graduates who wish to receive their diplomas on stage must wear caps and gowns appropriate for their programs of study. Caps and gowns are available to purchase online from September 1 through March 2017. Please keep in mind that regalia ordering and shipping takes up to 5 weeks. Please order now. Order your regalia online.
Before ordering your regalia, please make sure to follow this "how to guide" to make sure you order the correct regalia. If you are an undergraduate student, you need to order the gown and a tassel. If you are a graduate student, you need to order the gown, tassel, and hood. The tassel and hood color correspond with your school program.
ESL and TOEFL completers should wear formal or business attire to the ceremony.
Student Speaker Contest
The Student Speaker Contest is now open and will run from March 1, 2017 to March 22, 2017 COB. From the contest we will pick at least one student to speak at graduation, other students will be picked to do a video to be shown at graduation, and other graduates will be featured in the VIU magazine.
Graduation Invitation Letter
Students are responsible for writing their own invitation letter to send their parents, friends and family. Please click here to download a graduation invitation letter to use. You will need to write a graduation invitation letter for each person you are inviting to graduation. Please note, the graduation invitation letter is not a ticket to get into the graduation ceremony.
We recommend to assist with the visa process for your family and friends that you do the following:
- Write, sign and print the graduation invitation letter
- Request a status letter from the registrar’s office
- Optional: print unofficial transcript
Students participating in graduation will be given three tickets. Tickets can be picked up from April 3, 2017 to May 5, 2017 by COB at the Student Affairs office. If more than three tickets are needed, the day of graduation family members and friends can stand in the Will Call line and we will distribute the remaining tickets on a first come basis.
Professional photographers will be taking pictures throughout the ceremony. Following the ceremony, VIU backdrops will be provided outside of the venue for the graduate to take pictures with friends, family and faculty. All photos from the commencement ceremony will be available online here.
For those unavailable to attend, a live feed of the commencement ceremony is available on VIU’s website at www.viu.edu. A video of the entire ceremony will be uploaded on VIU’s YouTube channel (@ VirginiaIU) within two weeks of the event.
This year’s graduation theme is, “Finding inspiration in the world around you". Feel free to share your pictures and good wishes to the graduates on social media with the hashtag #VIUclassof2017.
