Read what VIU students have to say about their individual volunteering experiences. Discovery how students contributed to the community, met new friends, worked as a team, and learned new skills.
Another great experience was volunteering with Food for Others. Every day I looked forward in helping the agency serve food to children who could not afford meals.
VIU also organizes volunteer feedback sessions and provides sufficient support for volunteers to finish their assignments successfully. I am thankful to VIU for giving me this great opportunity to volunteer.
Volunteering is an element of my life that I have always treasured and taken pleasure in. Even before beginning my studies with VIU, I volunteered for different events such as hosting school functions and managing a blood donation program.
As a VIU student, I have actively been involved with Student Affairs. With them, I helped to raise money for scholarships part volunteering for the yard sale and car wash event. Through this volunteering activity, many students will be able to receive scholarships.
I have also volunteered with the Admissions Office and filled in for the front desk. Both opportunities allowed me to interact with both employees and students. Here I learned the importance of learning how to work together.
The Career Center has also encouraged me to participate as a volunteer. I assisted at the Alumni Dinner and also became trained on how to conduct an InterviewStream software demonstration for students. By learning how to use the software, I was able to show other students how to use the resource to improve their interviewing skills. Another event that I volunteered for through the Career Center was Fairfax County’s World Police and Fire Games. I was assigned to serve as a spectator ambassador and I was responsible for checking-in athletes and distributing sports gear and equipment to them. I also checked in volunteers. Additionally, I was assigned to record game scores for tennis matches. It was a great experience to meet and talk with people from various countries, such as the US, Australia, England, Hong Kong, and Canada. We enjoyed sharing stories about our diverse cultures.
Currently, I am working as an associate of the Student Government Union, where my role is to act as a bridge between VIU students and the university. As a result, I have been able to increase my communication skills and make new friends.
Volunteering motivates me to give something back to the community. Volunteering at VIU has helped me to learn about good sportsmanship and the importance of building positive relationships with people from different countries, genders, and age groups. Volunteering has provided a healthy boost to my self-esteem and life satisfaction, too.
